Job Title: Investigation Support Officer
Location: 10 Southway, Colchester, Essex, CO3 3BU, United Kingdom
Pay Rate: PAYE: £14.08 per hour / Limited/Umbrella: £19.19 per hour
Contract: 6 Months

Main Purpose of the Role The Investigation Support Officer (ISO) will assist in investigations by undertaking key roles such as researching, gathering evidence, recording intelligence, liaising with Children’s Social Care, and participating in joint actions with statutory partners. The ISO will also attend child protection case conferences and carry out safeguarding responsibilities. The role supports investigators in securing best evidence and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental investigations.

Main Responsibilities
  • Interview witnesses and victims of crime, assist in suspect interviews, take accurate statements, and assess their reliability for court purposes.

  • Manage the seizure and viewing of CCTV, analyse material, prepare reports, and coordinate house-to-house enquiries. Provide evidence in court when required.

  • Conduct investigative research using relevant systems, maintain accurate records, analyse information, and produce detailed reports.

  • Support and liaise with victims and witnesses, providing updates on case progress and signposting to appropriate services.

  • Assist in searches and act as Exhibits Officer when appointed, ensuring the integrity, security, and accurate recording of evidence.

  • Prepare complete, accurate, and timely paperwork to ensure evidential integrity.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and policies (e.g., Criminal Law, PACE, CPIA, RIPA).

  • Liaise with Children’s Social Care, attend child protection case conferences, and undertake joint safeguarding actions.

  • Conduct safeguarding actions as part of investigations to mitigate risks to victims, witnesses, and suspects.

Necessary Experience and Qualifications
  • Essential:

    • Full, clean UK driving licence (role requires travel).

    • ABE (Achieving Best Evidence) trained.

    • High integrity, due to the confidential and sensitive nature of the role.

    • Strong communication skills and ability to build effective working relationships.

    • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple cases, and prioritise workload with minimal supervision.

    • Good IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Desirable:

    • PIP2 and SOTO (Sexual Offence Trained Officer) qualifications.

    • Experience in safeguarding vulnerable persons.

    • Experience in criminal investigations, including conducting interviews and taking statements with adults and children.

    • Working knowledge of intelligence systems such as Athena and PNC (training can be provided).

Additional Information
  • This is a designated post requiring high integrity and confidentiality. A pre-employment health surveillance questionnaire will be required.

  • Flexibility is essential. Post holder may need to work extended hours at short notice and start at other designated locations as required.

  • The role involves dealing with officers, members of the public, and statutory partners across a broad spectrum of society.
