About the Role
The Family Support Worker will work in partnership with parents, carers, and professionals to provide support, guidance, and care to children and their families. The role involves direct work with families, contributing to assessments, and supporting the delivery of high-quality services.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake direct work with parents/carers and children, including group work.
- Provide information to assist in assessments and decision-making.
- Report safeguarding concerns to appropriate staff.
- Support service users in developing positive relationships and social confidence.
- Transport and escort children and adults as needed.
- Maintain accurate records in line with departmental standards.
- Collaborate with colleagues, community groups, and external agencies.
- Attend and contribute to relevant meetings.
- Participate in training and professional development.
- Comply with health and safety, confidentiality, and data protection policies.
- Engage in supervision and appraisal under the Council’s ‘Dignity at Work’ scheme.
Essential:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with children and families in difficulty.
- Experience in outreach or one-to-one work with parents/carers.
- Experience delivering group parenting programmes.
- Understanding of child development and essential needs.
- Knowledge of barriers to learning and development.
- Awareness of safeguarding systems and child protection procedures.
- Understanding of family stress and its impact.
- Knowledge of relevant childcare law and family support interventions.
- Knowledge of local safeguarding procedures and relevant legislation.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to manage time effectively and work flexibly.
- Sensitive and effective engagement with families in crisis.
- Ability to build effective relationships with families and professionals.
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent (or willingness to work towards it).
- Full driving licence and access to a vehicle for work.
- Ability to travel (eligible for essential car user allowance).
- Willingness to work outside normal office hours when required.
- Compliance with Council’s Smoking Policy.
